A water army (网络水军) is a group of users who are paid to post online comments targetted toward a specific user, topic, or hashtag. The term is usually used in a negative context to describe malicious users and bots paid to inflate traffic toward targeted rumors. Water army participants are generally paid per comment and often have no interest or knowledge of the topics they are commenting on.
